The Reviewer
My name’s Erin, but on the internet I go by Aelia*. I’m a 27-year old with a BA in English, who used to have a job in retail** but is now an Apprentice Electrician. Most days, I read too much, but I also have a weakness for video games, cartoons, and footnotes. I dream of a lot of things: being a princess, owning a bookstore, working in publishing, being a librarian, or ruling the world. Some dreams are more attainable than others, obviously.
The Blog
I started this blog as a hobby in April 2010. I don’t regret it, and have enjoyed it much more than I imagined. I try to balance taking it seriously with having fun, and feel like I’ve been fairly successful so far.
The Books
I predominantly read Young Adult, Romance, Paranormal, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi books. I also read a lot of Manga, as well as a few Graphic Novels. I have been known to branch into other genres on occasion, but it’s not common. Check out what I’ve read so far.
My favorite authors include Robin McKinley, Diana Wynne Jones, Tamora Pierce, Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance, Kim Harrison, and Kelley Armstrong, to name a few. There are others, but they’re either new favorites, or names which don’t immediately spring to mind.
The Rating Scale
I rate books on a scale of 1-5, with half-points possible. There is no real scientific system to it, I’m not looking for particular things, it’s just based on my enjoyment of the book.
- 5 of 5: Books I loved and will definitely read again.
- 4 of 5: Books I liked and might read again.
- 3 of 5: Books that are alright, but I probably won’t re-read.
- 2 of 5: Books that I didn’t like and I’ll probably get rid of.
- 1 of 5: Books that I hated, or couldn’t finish.
Review Policy
I am available to review books, and am more likely to do so if they are from a genre I read and a copy is provided, or it is available from my local library. If I choose to read/review a book, I cannot guarantee a positive review, but I will be honest. Send me an email or leave me a comment if you’d like something reviewed.
Please note: As of September 2012 I stopped writing reviews. This blog remains active, however, as I live in eternal hope of having the time to review once more. Until that time, I am unavailable for reviews.
Disclosure
Most books I review are owned, or borrowed from friends or the library. Those books which I do not own, or which were received from an author/publisher will be noted in the individual review. If I do not say, just assume I’ve received it. (Though it’s not likely, I’d rather you err in that direction than any other.)

I’m relieved to see that there are still people reading books out there, as teaching sometimes led me to believe that this was no longer a valid form of communication. Students don’t read. They’re very much jerks about it. Teaching a class and realizing that nobody has a clue what the hell you’re referring to when you mention something from page 2 of the reading probably drove that home more than once.

The few of us who chose the grad school route… have tried to survive. I don’t know how to nicely say that we’re all miserable and it’s only the goal of potentially making more money that has us sticking with it….

OK, I don’t want to be too depressing here, nor am I sure which degree you’re going for. But statistically, you’ll actually make more money with an MA than PhD. I wouldn’t recommend the PhD. Even tenure track income (rarer and rarer) is meh so you won’t be able to buy a house or whatever the rest of your friends are doing. And then there’s the fact that you can’t choose where to live. It’s very disempowering.
That said, if you want to write, academia gives you a lot of material. And most post-college jobs suck anyway, so it’s a fine way to while away a few years.

I’ve been reading so much for the past two days, that I can barely focus on anything further than arms length!!
While our tastes in reading are somewhat different, these reviews are really great.
You’re able to convey enough of what each book has to offer, and what it lacks without giving away the entire plot.
I am enjoying the links to the other blogs too!
